Star Dispatches Program Questions

What is Star Dispatches?

Star Dispatches are long form news and feature pieces delivered in an electronic format. They will all be approximately 8,000 to 10,000 words in length and will take approximately 30 minutes to an hour to read.

Not a newspaper. Not a book. Star Dispatches is a unique weekly eReads program that delivers exclusive long form journalism direct from the Toronto Star's award-winning newsroom to readers across Canada and around the world.
With Star Dispatches, readers can sign up and an in-depth eRead will be sent every Friday that takes you beyond the pages of our newspaper and our website, thestar.com, to explore news and feature stories from a new and unique perspective.

How is the content different from what's already available in my print edition of the Toronto Star or thestar.com?
Each Star Dispatches eRead will take about 30-40 minutes to read and offers more insight and in-depth journalism than can be contained in our daily printed newspaper. In many cases, eReads offer the story behind the story, shedding light on months and even years of extensive probing and investigation required to break major news stories.

How does it work?

Every Friday a new perspective on a news story is available for your tablet, eReader or computer for only $1/week. With your Star Dispatches subscription, you'll explore news and features from a new and unique perspective. Each is written by the Toronto Star journalists who covered the stories - with no restrictions, no distractions and is available for your tablet, e-reader or computer.
Every Friday you'll receive an email notifying you that your latest Star Dispatches eRead is available. Simply click the link for your preferred device provided in the email to download the file. If you're a Toronto Star subscriber, there's no need to worry about billing, Star Dispatches will be added to your existing subscription. If you are not a Toronto Subscriber, you'll be prompted to add your credit card information when you sign up for Star Dispatches. Your credit card will be charged $4.33 plus applicable taxes during the 3rd week of each month.

What are the guiding principles of Star Dispatches?

The journalistic integrity of Star Dispatches holds to the same guiding principles as those of the Toronto Star.
Click here to read the Toronto Star Newsroom Policy and Journalistic Standards Guide.
In addition to these standards, the Atkinson Principles have shaped the values and beliefs of the Toronto Star. Joseph E. Atkinson developed strong views on both the role of a large city newspaper and the editorial principles it should espouse throughout his 50 years as publisher of the Toronto Star from 1899 to 1948. These values and beliefs now form what are called the Atkinson Principles. For more than a century, they have provided the intellectual foundation on which the Star has operated and have given the paper its distinctive voice.
